Gunman attacks jogger at UMW this morning, police say

July 10, 2008 12:00 am

(10:20 a.m.) Fredericksburg-area police are looking for a gunman who attacked a woman jogger at a UMW track off Hanover Street early this morning, authorities say.
The reported attack, which happened about 7:30 a.m., caused a lockdown at parts of the University of Mary Washington, but the school has reopened since then.

Natatia Bledsoe of the Fredericksburg Police Department said the attacker began to tie the woman's hands and dropped the gun as the woman resisted.

Bledsoe said the attacker got flustered, grabbed his gun and ran from the scene.

She said Fredericksburg Police, university police, the National Park Service and the Stafford Sheriff's Office all did a ground search for the man, but have been unsuccessful so far.

"The biggest concern is he may still be nearby," she said.

The man, Bledsoe said, is described as a white male in his early 20s with short brown hair, wearing black shorts and a white T-shirt. He is said to be 6'2" and clean shaven.

Fredericksburg Police are sending out a reverse 911 message to Fredericksburg residents near College Heights and Greenbrier Apartments with a warning of the attack.

Anyone who sees the suspect should call 911 immediately, Bledsoe said.

Why do these women insist on jogging by themselves? They go out with no weapons and sometimes they wear mp3 players. And most joggers and bikers are just oblivious to everything.

And bikes are not protection, they can go down in a second. Then you are on the ground and where the attackers wants you.

We're women, not robots. And in many cases the men are so much stronger. I still believe in MACE! Some idiot is waiting in the brush for you "health joggers". Get a clue.
